Preston is a beautiful mountain valley located in Southeastern Idaho just miles from the Utah border. Preston has a small town atmosphere with a population of 4791. Preston is the biggest town in Franklin county. Franklin county population is 11,590. Preston has just two stop lights. four banks, one grocery store, one theater, one golf course, one bowling alley, and several churches to chose from. Preston's elevation is 4718 feet. Annual average temperatures is 46°. Summer temperatures seldom go higher than 95° and coldest temperatures seldom go below 0°.There are three high schools in the county — Preston , Franklin County.and West Side. Three elementary schools dot the area as well as a middle school in Preston. This area is served by a weekly newspaper, “The Preston Citizen”, and a radio station, KACH AM-1340.
Preston, nestled in beautiful Cache Valley, has a lot to offer as far as recreation goes. The area has several local reservoirs for fishing, boating, and swimming. The Cub River and Bear River offers fishing, and tubing and rafting on the Bear River. There are several areas for camping in the Cub River area and other surrounding areas along with many four wheeling trails. Preston also has a local hot springs at Riverdale Resort where there is an olymic pool, two soaking pools along with a slide. A local theatre, bowling alley, and golf course complete our local recreation.
Summer in Preston is marked by the PRCA and WPRA approved, more than half-century-old "That Famous Preston Night Rodeo", where cowboys and girls from national and international fame come to compete and rise to the challenge only buckin' broncs and bulls can offer. There's nothing quite like sitting in the stands, tasting the dust and experiencing the courage of these participants and cheering them on to victory. The Rodeo began in 1936,and is the second oldest night-time rodeo, under lights. This coming year 2009, the rodeo will be held July 31 and Aug 1-2. If you're looking for a real "rootin-tootin", "out of the old west" time, you won't be disappointed. Hope to see you there.
Thanksgiving weekend is a wonderful time to visit Preston. That is the time for the 'Festival of the Lights'. It starts the day after Thanksgiving with a free show for the kids at the Worm Creek Opera House at 2 PM. At 5:30 there is live music and entertainment at the stage set up in the middle of town, which goes til 6:30. The fireworks begin and then the lighted Christmas Parade. On Friday night there will be a production of "Scrooge" at the Worm Creek Opera House.
Saturday at 1:10 there is a bed race parade where the participants are announced and the teams get ready for the race. Then at 1:30 the race begins. At 2:30 there is a kids program and a kids parade. The children can then go the "Santa House' by US Bank and share their wish list with Santa and have cookies and hot chocolate. The free movie for the kids starts at 3pm. The same schedule then starts at 5:30 as the night before. After the parade on Saturday everyone can then be entertained by the Bar J Wranglers at the High School Gymnasium at 8 o'clock. Tickets are being sold at various locations in town. It is a wonderful time with fun for the whole family and people come from miles around to enjoy the festivities.
